🎗️ Winterhawks Vs. Cancer: Milton rallies in Zach Gibson’s memory
Sunday, Oct. 18, 3–7pm · Milton Sports Centre, 605 Santa Maria Blvd. · Free entry, donations welcome

Milton’s minor hockey community is rallying for Winterhawks Vs. Cancer, a fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Canada in memory of Zach Gibson, a former Winterhawks player who died last year at 14. His mom, Julie Kolmer, is leading the effort and says it’s been heartwarming to see the community, including strangers, step up to help. The afternoon lines up with house-league hockey’s opening weekend and features a 4:15pm game between the Winterhawks’ top fundraising team and Halton police (Zach was once an honorary police chief), then a $5 Skate for Cancer Research, live music, food trucks, vendors and a silent auction. A close friend of Zach’s has written a song in his memory that will be sold on the day, with proceeds going to Childhood Cancer Canada. Scotiabank is matching day-of donations up to $5,000, and the goal is $15,000. Can’t make it? You can donate online through Childhood Cancer Canada.

The Town of Milton launched a redesigned milton.ca on Wednesday, with simpler menus, easier-to-find contact info, plain-language pages, “What’s on this page” quick links and more accessibility options like contrast and text-size controls. Some old links from search engines may point to moved pages for a little while, so use the site search if you hit a dead end.

Milton Then & Now

🏰 Milton’s $1 castle
Town Hall, 150 Mary St. · Built 1855

Milton’s Town Hall started life as the Halton County Court House, finished in 1855 on four acres donated by developer Hugh Foster and built from rough-faced stone from the nearby Niagara Escarpment. It was one of only three castle-style courthouses built in Ontario. When the courts moved to a new building on Steeles Avenue, the Town bought the old courthouse and Victoria Park from Halton Region for just $1, and after a major restoration it reopened as Town Hall in 1985. Next time you walk past those towers, you’re looking at the best dollar Milton ever spent.
