🎃 How Milton did Halloween

Mild weather, big crowds and a lot of candy. Downtown trick-or-treating on Main Street got rave reviews for the costumes and the treats, and Saturday’s barrier-free trick-or-treat street had a great turnout, thanks to the organizers, local groups and volunteers who made it happen.

Out in the neighbourhoods, one household near Coates counted about 230 trick-or-treaters. And a family that picks a different Canadian city to trick-or-treat in every year chose Milton this time, came home with what they called an “absurd” candy haul, and named Trudeau Park the best spot in town. We’ll take it.

🏒 Menace close out the road trip

Menace 4, St. Michael’s 3 (OT)
Sunday, Nov. 1

Down 2-0 in the second period, the Menace roared back for a 4-3 overtime win in Toronto. Dean Deligeorgis and Milton’s own Chris Soares (on the power play) tied it before the second intermission, and Cam Lang put Milton ahead with five minutes left. The Buzzers tied it with 33 seconds to go, but Rilan Swain won it on his own just 1:24 into overtime. Milton outshot St. Michael’s 49-26, Austin McKillop made 23 saves, and the Menace wrap up their five-game road trip at 16-3-1-0. Next up: home to the Toronto Patriots on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:30pm.

⚡ Your hydro bill is changing

Ontario's new electricity prices took effect Sunday, November 1.

The good news? The actual price of electricity per kilowatt-hour has gone down across all three pricing plans.

The catch? The Ontario Electricity Rebate has also been reduced, from 23.5% to 15.7%.

So while the electricity rates are lower, the smaller rebate offsets some of those savings.

Here's what you're paying now

Electricity plan

New price

Time-of-Use – Off-peak

9.1¢

Time-of-Use – Mid-peak

14.6¢

Time-of-Use – On-peak

18.9¢

Ultra-Low Overnight – Overnight

3.7¢

Ultra-Low Overnight – Weekend off-peak

9.1¢

Ultra-Low Overnight – Mid-peak

14.6¢

Ultra-Low Overnight – On-peak

37.7¢

Tiered – First 1,000 kWh

11.2¢

Tiered – Above 1,000 kWh

13.2¢

When is electricity cheapest?

If you're on the regular Time-of-Use plan, here's the winter schedule:

  • Off-peak: Weekdays 7 PM–7 AM, plus weekends and holidays.

  • Mid-peak: Weekdays 7–11 AM and 5–7 PM.

  • On-peak: Weekdays 11 AM–5 PM.

That means running the dishwasher, washing machine or dryer after 7 PM or on weekends could help save a little money.

What about Ultra-Low Overnight?

If you have an electric vehicle or use a lot of electricity overnight, this plan might be worth investigating.

You can get electricity for just 3.7¢ per kWh between 11 PM and 7 AM.

The trade-off? Weekday electricity between 4 PM and 9 PM costs a hefty 37.7¢ per kWh.

Can you change your plan?

Yes!

Milton Hydro customers can switch between Time-of-Use, Ultra-Low Overnight and Tiered pricing through MyAccount, under the Smart Meter tab, or by calling 905-876-4611.

Changes take effect with your next billing period, and you can switch back later.

🔨 Thank you, Milton Home Hardware

After more than 60 years serving Milton, Milton Home Hardware Building Centre on Steeles Avenue East has announced it will close, with its last day on January 15, 2027. The store says its lease is ending and a large proposed rent increase, along with a tough stretch for building-materials retailers, made staying open no longer sustainable. Milton has had a local hardware store since 1893, and in 1964 the store then called McKim Hardware became one of Home Hardware’s 128 founding members. That’s a lot of paint chips, lumber runs and “can you help me find this?” moments.

The good news: they’re open and ready to help right up to January 15, with special savings on selected items as they prepare to close. If they ever helped you finish a project, now’s a good time to stop in and say thanks.

📜 This week in Milton history

On November 4, 1964, the Canadian Champion announced something called the "Christmas Gift Bonanza."

The idea was simple: shop at participating local businesses, collect tickets and enter for a chance to win a 10-day trip to Bermuda for two.

Not a bad incentive to do your Christmas shopping locally!

Some things never change. Milton has always known the value of supporting its local businesses.

💛 Milton Kindness

Someone dropped their phone on Main Street during downtown trick-or-treating, and it was handed in at a local shop so the owner could pick it up. Over in Hawthorne Village, one decorated house asked trick-or-treaters to bring a non-perishable food item, and treated the grown-ups to coffee and hot chocolate in return. Candy for the kids, food for neighbours who need it. That’s Milton.

That’s it for today, Milton. Get your vote in before noon, enjoy the warm weather, and we’ll see you Wednesday with the vote results & gift card winner!
